We are known as advocates for precious gems on little film and have been giving high quality technical assistance and visibility to 8mm and Super 8 filmmmakers since 1978. OUR SPECIALITY

is very high quality work on CAMERA ORIGINAL REVERSAL FILM only, in 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm gauges.
We do not work on negative filmstock at all and prefer not to work on print material unless it it a sole surviving copy.
We love black & white or color reversal film, especially Kodachrome.
We work on motion picture film that is new or archival,
shrunken, deteriorated or damaged
for artists, archivists and television producers.

Our work is FULLY COMPONENT Analog or Digital
with SCENE-BY-SCENE COLOR IMPROVEMENTS and CONTRAST CONTROL
to REVEAL the DETAILS in REVERSAL FILM which is quite contrasty by nature because it was designed as direct projection material.

WE ALWAYS USE WET-GATE for SCRATCH SUPPRESSION
unless by arrangement with the artist on an artist's hand painted original.

THE MASTER

WE MAKE THE MASTER ON NORTH AMERICAN STANDARD (NTSC) BROADCAST TELEVISION FORMATS OF BETACAM-SP™ or DIGITAL BETACAM™.
This assures that you have a robust medium on the shelf besides your real treasure, the more durable original film. Your motion picture film, when stored properly---cool and dry--is expected to endure and be able to be retrieved centuries longer than current electronic media. Using the analog or digital Betacam master videotapes that we make, other versions can be made like VHS or DVD for sharing with family or friends for home viewing, window dubs for research, or mini-DV or DV-CAM for computer desktop editing. Our sister site will recommend how you annotate reels, gather additional information, store original film and access, edit or share the contents of these remarkable films.

FRAME RATES / FILM SPEED


ON ARCHIVAL FILM WE STRIVE TO REPRESENT ORIGINAL CAMERA FRAME RATES so that the motion is natural.

On artists’ films, WE REPRESENT DESIGNATED FRAME RATES, VARIABLE FROM 1 TO 24 FRAMES PER SECOND as instructed by the artist or the director.

WE DO CAREFUL FILM HANDLING, INSPECTION, REPAIR, RECONDITIONING, and RESPLICING AS NEEDED.

CLEANING

We check and clean film by hand. We will advise you when we need to charge for repair or assembly. There is NO CHARGE FOR CLEANING
unless unusual circumstances present themselves, such as mildew. It is our prerogative to make our work as clean as possible.

FAST TURN-AROUND

We work by appointment only. We often transfer and ship work on same day when scheduled in advance with you. We encourage you to plan your production carefully and book time with us 10 days in advance, or more if the job is large.

PAYMENT

We ask for a check as deposit on the work in advance based on our estimate. We are very old-fashioned; we do not accept credit cards. If you have overpaid, we will refund the balance immediately. Small balances due are often billed. We reserve the right to add a surcharge for work performed with less than 48 hours notice, for nightss, weekends or for jobs requiring intensive extra documentation. If you are reasonable to work with you may well avoid surcharges.

RIGHTS AND RELEASES

We transfer original materials usually carried to us in the hands of the original owners. If you are asking for service on a film not made or owned by you, we need you to get permission and clear all rights and releases prior to working with us as we infer that your contracting for our work implies that you have the rights to copy the material.

LIABILITY

Your films have artistic, historic and sentimental value to you or even perhaps monetary value to your production. We treat your films with great care while they are in our hands, but we do not assume responsibility for loss or damage to your films while they are in our possession nor in transit. Common carriers have advised us they will not insure films for content but will only insure for replacement value of raw filmstock.

SUPERVISION

In some instances the films need to be hand carried in which case a supervised transfer session is recommended. Supervision can save you money if you have done the work to be very familiar with the footage, have organized it and assembled it. In some cases, a documentary producer will want selected shots from a very large collection. We will recommend ways of organizing and marking the selects which can speed the work along.

TELEVISION SERIES

For 20 years we have handled the historic personal film records that are unique footage in the series Frontline, The American Experience, Eyes on the Prize, Nova, Zoom, P.O.V.on Public Television and ABC's The Twentieth Century. We like to say that if you see old home movies in documentary films with good shadow detail, looking clean, scratch-free and with the movement on screen at the right frame rate, it is likely we transferred it. But, when it's Super 8 used for a flashy, degraded or a trendy look in a cutaway, it is likely we did NOT handle it.

RATES


Our rates are not published here at this time. Work is by hand for restoration and in the scene by scene transfer so it can get expensive very quickly. We will write a link here soon to explain how we recommend you check the condition of and sort your film to save our time and your money. Please call Toni to estimate your work.

TECHNICAL CONSULTATION

1 hour minimum, day rates for training archives staff. Call.

SPECIAL FILM HANDLING

Rates by the hour and then quarter hour increments for evaluation, condition reports, recommendations, reel assembly, repairs, re-splicing, removing mildew and reconditioning as required. Call.

WET GATE TRANSFER SCENE-BY-SCENE ONLY, REVERSAL FILM ONLY.


This means that base scratches will be greatly diminished or disappear and your film will look as clean as a possible.

TAPE

We provide new Fuji (only Fuji) videotape at cost. We transfer to Beta-Sp or Digital Betacam, in NTSC.

If time allows, we can make a single viewing dub from the master to miniDV or VHS (straight or window dub) but we prefer you use tape duplication houses in your area for making dubs.

SHIPPING ARRANGEMENTS

We track all packages in and out, so you must call before shipping with carrier and tracking number. We handle original materials which are irreplaceable.

Master videotape and film are shipped separately for safety. This insures that an original film and master video are never in the same airplane, truck or location in transit.

Please telephone us to work out strategy for delivery so we know method and date of arrival. We highly recommend bar-coded services like FedEx, Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation, or UPS air service.

Please pack film in a cardboard box with adequate padding. Never ship film, audio or videotape in a fiber-filled bag; NEVER!

Rowley town is 35 miles north northeast of Boston and bisected by Interstate Route 95. We live and work near the Plum Island Great Marsh in the historic East End off the old coastal Route 1-A. We work a lot of the time so we are sorry but we cannot encourage drop-in visitors. Please call for an appointment.
